COVID-19: SA records more than 13k cases, 7-day average increases

The Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal combined for 53% of the new COVID-19 cases recorded on Saturday. Unfortunately, 238 more people died of the disease.

South Africa recorded more than 13 000 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, 14 August, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD). The 60 210 tests conducted over the past 24 hours represent a positivity rate of 21.6%, down from yesterday’s 23%. The Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal continue as the provinces with the most daily infections.

SA ADDS 13 021 NEW COVID-19 CASES

The 13 021 new COVID-19 cases detected in South Africa on Saturday brings the total number of active cases in the country to 154 071. Unfortunately, 238 more people died of COVID-19-related complications, according to the NICD, bringing the death toll to 76 869.

A further 378 people were hospitalised because of COVID-19 within the past 24 hours. There are now 14 402 people admitted for treatment in both public and private hospitals.

“The total number of cases today (n= 13 021) is lower than yesterday (n= 13 921) but higher than the average number of new cases per day over the 7 preceding days (n=10 300),” said the NICD

“The 7-day moving average daily number of cases has increased.”

PROVINCIAL BREAKDOWN

The Western Cape (27%) and KwaZulu-Natal (26%) continue to be the provinces with the most daily cases. Gauteng was third with 14%; Eastern Cape followed with 10%; Mpumalanga had 7% and the Free State and North West each had 5%, respectively.

The Northern Cape and Limpopo rounded off the list with 4% and 3%, respectively.

The list below shows the new COVID-19 cases identified by province, the bracketed number is the number of cases detected on the previous day:

  • Eastern Cape – 1252 cases (1180);
  • Free State – 661 cases (866);
  • Gauteng – 1784 cases (2027);
  • KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) – 3445 cases (3359);
  • Limpopo – 372 cases (361);
  • Mpumalanga – 920 cases (899);
  • North West – 667 cases (701);
  • Northern Cape – 459 cases (610);;
  • Western Cape – 3461 cases (3918); and
  • Unallocated –  0 cases.
