Alicia Lamprecht is probably the most relieved person in the whole country – her baby was found safe, after he was snatched by hijackers on Monday.

All too often, stories of criminality in South Africa don’t come with a happy ending. However, we are pleased to report that this particular incident has come to a rather heartwarming conclusion. Thanks to the efforts of both community forums and diligent police officers in Cape Town, a baby stolen in a hijacking this morning has made it home safely.

Cape Town baby ‘home safe’ after hijacking terror

On Monday afternoon, SAPS verified several key details about this brazen hijacking:

  • A silver VW Polo was hijacked in Bishop Street, Observatory.
  • The victim’s seven-month-old baby was in the vehicle and suspect/s made off with the baby inside.
  • OBSID (Observatory Improvement District) informed SAPS which immediately set to work.
  • Reports have confirmed that the baby was recovered, unharmed, and reunited with his mother.
  • The baby was apparently dropped on the side of the road still strapped to his car seat when a woman heard him crying.
  • One suspect has been arrested on Monday, and further busts are expected in the days to come.

Politicians praise police for averting tragedy

The infant child was in the backseat of the vehicle targeted by multiple hijacking suspects. After forcing the terrified mother from the car, the crooks sped off, and eventually abandoned the car on the M5. The boy, however, was nowhere to be seen once the motor was located. This bizarre act also mirrors a similar crime reported last week in Fourways.

Nonetheless, a coordinated police effort bought the tot home – and Western Cape Government Minister Albert Fritz was amongst the first to congratulate SAPS on their speedy response. Like the rest of us, the Cape Town-based politician is over the moon to see the safe return of the child – and couldn’t hide how proud he was of the officers involved:

“When I was alerted to this story I was really upset. This is perhaps the worst thing that can happen to any parent. I would therefore like to commend SAPS for their speedy response and the successful arrest in this matter.

And, most importantly, I want to thank them for ensuring the safe return of the little baby to his mother. Today, we can be proud of our men and women in blue.” | Albert Fritz
