Parts of Tshwane continue experiencing the devastation caused by the recent heavy rains – now several areas in Centurion find themselves under water due to flash floods.

Videos and pictures show some cars in Centurion submerged in water on Wednesday, 19 January 2022. Here is one clip shared by anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee below.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had issued a warning the evening before, informing Gauteng citizens of the possible “disruptive rainfall” across the province. In the alert, the SAWS warned of flash floods, localised flooding and heavy rain.

FLASH FLOODS IN TSHWANE: OFFICIALS ON THE GROUND

In light of the heavy downpours in Tshwane, Disaster Management officials have been dispatched. Speaking to The South African, the City of Tshwane’s Emergency Management Services’ Roland Hendricks says there are officials on the ground in the several areas that have been impacted by the rain and will soon give further details on the extent of damage.

“We are visible. We are on the ground. In terms of correlating all the information and giving it to the media, we are busy with that. At the moment, I have everything consolidated together. They will then in that process confirm the extent of the floods and if there were any flash floods, what was the impact in those particular areas. So please allow us just some space to do that but our teams are absolutely on the ground, engaged and making the necessary assessments in that regard”

Tshwane has already had its fair share of damage, as a result of heavy weather. The city recently deemed four bridges in Olievenhoutbosch, Centurion too dangerous to cross.

“Following a multistakeholder site visit in the area, which included City officials, ward councillors and community leaders, we found that the main affected bridge is not suitable for use during the rainy season,” said MMC for Human Settlements, Abel Tau.
