Manqonyana, 48, and Selenga, 49, were arrested on 23 October 2022 by the crime-fighting unit’s Serious Corruption Investigation team in Klerksdorp, North West and charged with corruption, after allegedly offering a Hawks officer R50 000 and a bottle of Glenfiddich whisky to dispose of a docket involving a former senior Matlosana municipality official.

“According to the Hawks, the pair was nabbed at the Hawks offices, moments after handing over R25 000 and a bottle of Glenfiddich whisky to the investigating officer.

“Their vehicle was searched and R41 500 was allegedly also found. They are facing charges of corruption. Meanwhile, the money and the vehicle have been seized for further investigation,” said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson for the North West, Henry Mamothame.

Bail conditions

Manqonyana and Selenga both live in Gauteng so the court ordered that they report to Douglasdale Police Station and Midrand Police Station respectively, every Friday between 8:00 and 18:00.

After getting bail for the allegedly whisky and cash bribe, the court deferred the pair’s matter to 31 January 2023, to allow for further investigations.

Additionally, “due to the serious nature of the offence”, the case has been moved to the Specialised Commercial Crime Unit of the NPA, “for a joint investigation with the Hawks in preparation for trial”.

How much does Glenfiddich whisky cost?

It is unclear which bottle of Glenfiddich whisky was allegedly offered as a bribe but the Scotch whisky brand’s is not cheap.
