FW De Klerk state memorial service road closures for Cape Town

Police have announced the following public road closures for former deputy president FW De Klerk’s state memorial this weekend.

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints) is prepared for former deputy president FW De Klerk’s state memorial service to go ahead in Cape Town this weekend and has advised the public of road closures.

Natjoints has advised motorists that certain roads will be closed to the public on both Saturday and Sunday. 

Natjoints spokesperson, Colonel Athlenda Mathe, said that security forces had been meeting regularly to prepare for the state memorial service which will take place on Sunday, 12 December 2021 at the Groote Kerk in Cape Town, in compliance with the Covid-19  Alert Level 1 regulations.

“The structure, comprising of all law enforcement agencies at both National and Provincial levels as well as various other government departments, formed part of the planning team to ensure the smooth running of the state memorial service,” Nationts said in a statement on Friday.

“The NatJOINTS has assessed the state of readiness and preparedness of all law enforcement agencies and is satisfied with the plans which include security plans, route security, and access control of all the relevant departments,” Natjoints said.

Natjoints urged invited guests to conduct themselves in an orderly and responsible manner.

“ Attendees are also encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement officers and exercise patience in a bid to ensure that all participants are able mourn in a safe and secure environment,” Natjoints said.

“In line with the Covid-19 Adjusted Alert Level 1 protocols, attendees are reminded to wear their masks at all times and practice social distancing. Attendees are also advised that hand sanitiser stations will be available at all key points at the venue. Members of the public are cautioned against committing illegal acts as law enforcement agencies will not hesitate to act against anyone who conducts themselves in an unlawful manner,” Natjoints said.

Cape Town road closures announced

The anticipated road closures from Saturday 11 December to Sunday 12 December are as follows:

Groote Kerk

* Bureau and Spin Street between Adderley Street and Plein Street from 06:00 on Sunday 12 December.

*Parliament Street between Parliament Precinct and Church Square from 06:00 on Sunday 12 December

*Adderley Street (one lane nearest to Groote Kerk) between Parliament Precinct and Longmarket Street from 17:00 on Saturday 11 December until end of the memorial service on Sunday 12 December.

“We are confident that all attendees irrespective of race, colour, creed and/or political affiliation will come together harmoniously to honour the late Deputy President,” Natjoints said.
