A sickener, and then some: There are plenty of ways to describe the latest petrol price hike announced for December 2021 – we’re just not sure we can publish them without getting some sort of fine. Motorists across the country now face the daunting prospect of paying R20 per litre for their fuel from Wednesday onwards.

Petrol price latest – motorists forced to pay R20 per litre

Both grades of petrol will be subject to an increase of 81 cents. Meanwhile, wholesale diesel prices are going up by 72 cents as well. This marks the SIXTH month since May where the cost of fuel has increased, and the announcement comes four weeks after another mammoth rise shocked the motorists of Mzansi.

No-one will be surprised to hear that, for the fourth month out of the previous five, a new petrol price record has been set at the pumps. The threat of R20 per litre seemed almost alien at the start of the year, too…

Fill up before Wednesday 1 December

In January 2021, a litre of 95-grade petroleum would cost you just R14.86. That figure is now set to rise to an average of R20.35 for those living inland, rather than near coastal regions.

As fuel hikes continue to batter the South African consumer, it’s likely that the cost of living will also rise. If the petrol price goes up, trucks and HGVs have to spend more to fill their tanks, making food and essential items more expensive. This situation is truly a grim one, and it’s not the news any of us needed before Christmas.
