Scammers have set up a fake Facebook account in the name of KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu in an attempt to scam people out of their money in exchange for jobs.

The Department of Education issued a warning about the fake account in a statement at the weekend.

“The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal wishes to caution the public and members of the media about an unauthorised Facebook account that has been created using the name of its MEC Mr Kwazi Mshengu,” the department warned.

“The person behind the fake account is pretending to be the MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal and uses the platform to solicit money (R500 000) in exchange of jobs,” the department said.

The Department said that Mshengu had “dismissed and disassociated himself from all content related to the fake Facebook account”. He urged social media users not to be misled by imposters on Facebook.

“We are working with law enforcement agencies to clamp down on the impersonator/s and call on those involved to refrain from performing these illegal acts,” the department said.

Meanwhile, Kwazi Mshengu called on all communities to become proactive in addressing violence in society, particularly within schools.

This follows after Mshengu, together with the district and local Mayors of Alfred Duma Municipality visited  eZakheni Township, Ladysmith to engage members of the community around instability within schools caused by activities of drug abuse and gangsterism.

The acts of criminality led to the death of three learners from local schools. Incidents of rape had also been reported due to gangsterism in the area of Ezakheni Township.

“Violence in schools is a societal problem which require all stakeholders to play their part in order to create a safe schooling environment. Violence targeted against learners and teachers is a serious problem that demands the immediate attention of parents, churches, civil society and all stakeholders in the education sector,” Mshengu said.

The meeting included educators and learners as well as other stakeholders in law enforcement, labour and the broader community.
