New eThekwini Municipality Exco sits for the first time

eThekwini Municipality’s new Exco sat for the first time when new chair people were elected for the city’s committees on Monday.

eThekwini Municipality held the first sitting of its newly elected Executive Committee (Exco) during which it elected the new chairs of its various committees on Monday.

eThekwini Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, welcomed councillors by encouraging them to work together for the benefit of service delivery in the communities that elected them.

He reiterated the city’s commitment to ensuring a conducive environment for economic growth and job creation, stamping out corruption and achieving a clean audit. He called on officials to make plans to repair ageing infrastructure, which was one of the key priorities for the new term. 

Committee chairpersons for the five committees in the council were elected during the meeting. The committees are established in terms of Section 80 of the Municipal Structures Act 117 of 1998 to assist the Exco.

eThekwini Municipality elects new committee chairpersons

The following committee chairpersons were elected.

* Finance, Security and Emergency Services – Mxolisi Kaunda 

This committee is responsible for all financial matters in the City and considers and makes recommendations to the Executive Committee and Council on all matters pertaining to Emergency Services, Safety and Security.

* Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee – Philani Mavundla

This committee considers and makes recommendations to the Executive Committee and Council on all matters pertaining to electricity, engineering, human settlements, transport, waste management and water and sanitation.

* Economic Development and Planning Committee – Thandoxolo Sabela

This committee deals with the promotion of local economic development and investment opportunities in the eThekwini municipal area. It provides a conducive environment to promote entrepreneurship and also oversees regulations pertaining to land use management.

* Governance and Human Resources Committee –  Nkosenhle Madlala

This committee is responsible for corporate administration, promotes the interface between the municipality and local communities, national and international stakeholders, and human resources matters, including skills development.

  • Community Services Committee – Zamazulu Sokhabase 

This committee considers and makes recommendations to the Exco and council on all matters pertaining to community services, health, and social services.
