The NERSA-approved 18.65% electricity tariff increase kicks in for Eskom-supplied customers from Saturday, 1 April. Municipal customers will start feeling the pinch from 1 July.

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) approved the tariff increase earlier in 2023.

According to EWN, the tariff increase for municipalities will be 18.49% for the 2023/2024 financial year, and the April increase also affects those supplied directly by the power utility for now.

NERSA indicated municipal tariffs could not be immediately adjusted as the increase needed to correspond with different areas’ budgets.

The South African previously reported that the City of Cape Town has committed to shielding its residents from the whole rate hike. The City will implement a 17.6% increase for its residents.
