Eskom announced that load shedding would be extended to Wednesday and Thursday night, on Tuesday, 12 April.

LOAD SHEDDING EXTENDED

The blackouts will take place between 17:00 and 5:00 on 13 and 14 April, said the national power supplier due to a shortage of generation capacity and the continued delays in the return to service of units.

“The extension of load shedding is caused by the shortage of generation capacity and continued delays in returning to service four generating units at Camden Power Station and two generation units at Tutuka Power Station. Eskom teams are working hard to return as many of these units to service as possible,” said Eskom.

As things stand on Tuesday at 18:45, 4804MW of capacity is unavailable due to planned maintenance while a further 15 300MW is off the grid because of unplanned breakdowns.

A single unit that tripped at Lethabo Power Station on Tuesday morning has returned to service by the evening but it will be some time before it is operating at full capacity.

“Eskom would like to inform the public that any further deterioration in generation capacity may require further load shedding.

“We are managing the emergency generation reserves to limit the stage of load shedding. The overnight load shedding will be used to replenish the dam levels at the pump storage power stations,” said the power supplier.
