Eskom has implemented stage 2 load shedding immediately after Unit 5 of Medupi Power Station tripped on Monday night.

Earlier on Monday, Eskom said four generation units suffered breakdowns and urged the public to reduce its electricity usage.

ESKOM IMPLEMENTS STAGE 2 LOAD SHEDDING

Eskom said Unit 5 of Medupi Power Station tripped on Monday night taking some 700MW capacity with.

“Regretfully, Stage 2 load shedding has been implemented immediately.”

ESKOM SYSTEM UNDER SEVERE STRAIN

The power utility had warned of possible load shedding. It said its system is under severe strain because of the four breakdowns and the return to service of two other units has been delayed.

“This together with the inclement weather, which has increased the demand for electricity, has placed the power system under pressure.

“Eskom is working hard to return as many of these generation units to service as possible,” said the national power supplier.

The generation unit breakdowns occurred at Matla and Kriel – where a unit each tripped – and Camden Power Station, which saw two units go down.

“Furthermore, a generating unit each at Tutuka and Matla power stations have been delayed from returning to service, contributing to the current shortage of capacity.

As things stand, 4984MW is unavailable because of planned maintenance while a further 15 514MW of capacity is unavailable because of the unplanned breakdowns.

More details will be provided as soon as Eskom issues a detailed statement.
