It’s understood that carbon monoxide poisoning may have caused the deaths of 21 teenagers at a tavern in Scenery Park, East London this past Sunday.

There has been much mystery surrounding exactly how the youngsters died, but the relevant authorities have been roped in by the provincial department of health to look into the matter and finally provide clarity to grieving parents.

Several media outlets have already cited experts who suspect the teenagers inhaled, drink or smoked something poisonous. The tragedy has made world headlines and prompted calls for tough action to be taken against the owner of the tavern.

The Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) has already moved to shut down the Enyobeni tavern, but parents and community members have said this is not enough and want the owners prosecuted.

ENYOBENI TAVERN: PROBE INTO DEATHS BEING FINALISED

The South African enquired from the Eastern Cape Department of Health about carbon monoxide poisoning having possibly caused the Enyobeni tavern deaths.

The department’s spokesperson Mkhululi Ndamase has told us they are not in a position to disclose, particularly as they await a report, which is due on Thursday, 30 June 2022.

According to some reports, experts from the University of Cape Town‘s forensic pathology laboratory have gone through the stomach contents of the victims and are now finalising their work before releasing the results.

Now the owner of the tavern might himself behind bars after criminal charges were laid against him.

“Necessary steps are being taken to deal with this liquor outlet including the immediate revocation of the liquor license and laying criminal charges against the license holder for the blatant contravention of the Eastern Cape Liquor Act that clearly stipulates that no alcohol shall be sold to persons under the age of 18,” said the Eastern Cape Liquor Board’s CEO Dr Nombuyiselo Makala.
