The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape has arrested a 59-year-old man in connection with the alleged rape of a learner at the school he works.

“SAPS members in Tabankulu made a swift move on Friday 10 June 2022 and arrested a 59-year-old suspect believed to be the Principal of a local school. The arrest follows after an outcry by school children, the community and other stakeholders after a 21-year-old school child was allegedly raped by an elderly in the school,” said Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana.

SCHOOL PRINCIPAL DUE IN COURT ON MONDAY, FACING RAPE CHARGES

Eastern Cape SAPS says the school principal is expected to make an appearance at the Tababkulu Magistrate Court on Monday, 13 June 2022, on a charge of rape. The rape is alleged to have occurred on different occasions and is now being probed by the SAPS FCS unit.

“According to the report the incident occurred on different occasions but was not immediately reported to the SAPS until school children protested against the school authorities. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation by the FCS unit. A case of rape was registered and in less than 24 hours of the report, the police arrested the suspect,” Kinana added.

The Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has appreciated the work of the SAPS members who ensured a speedy arrest is made in the incident.

“The suspect must now have his day in court in order to account for his actions.” she said.

In Pretoria, a 29-year-old teacher arrested on a rape charge was denied bail. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Bongani Timothy Ntuli (29), an educator from Spark Primary School, raped a grade 6 learner from his school.

“It is alleged on 05 May 2022, the mother of the 12-year-old boy noticed some behavioural changes in the child, as he was not eating his favourite food.  Later that day, she decided to sleep with him, and that is when she noticed that he was struggling to sleep and had some bleeding,” said NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.

It was only the next day that the boy’s mother noticed some money had been missing from her account. When she confronted her son about it, he admitted to taking the money. He told her that he took the money to buy the teacher a PlayStation 4, so he could stop “bullying” him. The mother then reported the matter to police and Ntuli was arrested on 18 May 2022.
