Kwazakele birthday massacre: Four more suspects arrested for killing eight people

Police have made progress in the investigation into the Kwazakele birthday massacre, arresting four more suspects in connection with the mass shooting.

On Monday, 27 March, four more suspects were arrested in connection with the Kwazakele birthday party mass shootings, which occurred in January.

As previously reported, 11 people were shot at Maqanda Street in Kwazakele, Gqeberha, on 29 January. Seven people were killed at the scene, and four more were injured. One of the injured victims later succumbed to their wounds.

The suspects allegedly linked to the mass shooting were traced to flats in Walmer at the start of March. One suspect was arrested, and five others managed to flee.

Suspects found hiding in Peelton Location, transported to appear in court

On Monday, four more suspects were nabbed. “According to the information, the four fugitives aged between 30 and 34 were in hiding in Peelton Location where the police found them,” said South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana.

The first suspect, Mzwandile Mahambehlala, is currently detained at St Alban’s Prison. He is expected to appear before the court on Monday, 3 April, for a formal bail application.

The newly arrested suspects are being transported to Gqeberha, where they will appear before the New Brighton Court on Thursday, 30 March.
