Some members of the African National Congress (ANC) in the greater Johannesburg region have endorsed Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi to become the party’s next deputy president, replacing David Mabuza, at the elective conference this coming December.

At an event to commemorate Women’s Month in Protea South in Soweto, Ward 14 of the Moloto Tambane branch identified Kubayi as their ideal candidate to become deputy president, SABC News reports. The call for more women to serve within the top ranks of the ANC has been amplified following the death of the party’s deputy secretary-general, Jessie Duarte.

Several other ANC figures have reportedly been endorsed for the deputy president post, including Justice Minister Ronald Lamola, ANC treasurer-general Paul Mashatile and Jeff Radebe.

KUBAYI AVAILABLE TO SERVE AS ANC DEPUTY PRESIDENT

Mmamoloko Kubayi says she is available to run for the party’s president position, provided that enough branches nominate her,

“This is a message to women in the ANC who are told that you must be brave to raise your hand to say I am available for a top six saying it is not the end of the world bravery there are many women behind you to support you and we are saying we are ready when the branches are saying to us avail yourself at the right time we will say we are available amandla,” Kubayi said.

While current deputy president David Mabuza has indicated he will seek a second term at Luthuli House and Union Buildings, there has been speculation he might leave politics in 2024. Mabuza served as Mpumalanga’s Premier between 2008 and 2017, before surprising many and becoming Ramaphosa’s deputy at the elective conference in Nasrec.
