President Cyril Ramaphosa had some words of appreciation for outgoing Deputy President David Mabuza, thanking him for his service being at his beck and call. Ramaphosa used the last part of his reply to the State of the Nation Address (SONA) to pay tribute to his second-in -command on Thursday, 16 February 2023.

“I wish to extend my appreciation to Deputy President David Mabuza for his unwavering support over the last five years. He has ably led the South African National Aids Council and had extensive engagements with military veterans and traditional leaders,” he said.

It was reported in January that Mabuza had offered to step down ahead of an imminent cabinet reshuffle by Ramaphosa. He believes he is making things easier for his successor by doing so.

PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA PAYS TRIBUTE TO MABUZA

There’s no word on when exactly David Mabuza will step down as President Cyril Ramaphosa had previously said he would consider his request to leave office and pave the way for the new African National Congress (ANC) deputy president Paul Mashatile.

“He has supported peace-building efforts in South Sudan and led processes around land reform, among other things. Deputy President Mabuza has indicated his wish to step down from his position, a request that we are attending to”

When he spoke at his brother’s funeral, Mabuza said he had already spoken to Ramaphosa and is “making space” for Mashatile.

“As you all know, there was a conference where I declined nomination. I was deputy president of the ANC. But in that conference Paul Mashatile was elected to be deputy president. Then I was left as deputy president of the country. What do you think must happen?,” he said at the time.
