Just days after receiving the first installment of the State Capture Commission of Inquiry’s report, African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa has once again reflected on what it has uncovered and its devastating impact.

Ramaphosa delivered the ANC’s January 8th Statement at a rally in Polokwane on Saturday, where he laid out the party’s plans for 2022.

Acting Chief Justice Raymond Zondo handed Ramaphosa the report, which contained jaw-dropping findings against several prominent figures, including former president Jacob Zuma and former minister Malusi Gigaba, to name but a few.

Ramaphosa admitted that state capture has essentially resulted in somewhat of a brain drain for South Africa – qualified people in the public sector have left for opportunities abroad, some of them were unceremoniously fired from their jobs for resisting corruption, while others simply left out of frustration with the environment.

“Not only was state capture a systematic attempt at siphoning off public resources and funds; it also destroyed the capability of the state and led to the departure of capable people from public institutions as they resist state capture. Some were fired, some were forced to resign, some gave up, some were suspended for long periods and they left. Those were the critical skills that our country was robbed off,” Ramaphosa said.

RAMAPHOSA: WE MUST PUT STATE CAPTURE BEHIND US

In addition, President Cyril Ramaphosa says as the ANC, they will support the government in implementing the measures that are required to eventually eliminate conditions and conduct which gives way to state capture and systemic corruption.

Ramaphosa says the ANC plans to engage its structures and members to ensure they understand the contents of the State Capture Commission’s report as well as its damning findings.

“We will put in place mechanisms to process any parts of the commission report that pertain to the organisation, its deployees or members and to consider how the commission’s recommendations can help to enhance the fundamental renewal and rebuilding of our movement. We call on all South Africans to engage with the commission’s report and to be part of the national effort to put state capture behind us and build an ethical, capable developmental state and a society governed by the values of our democratic Constitution and the rule of law,”
