COVID-19: SA records 8920 cases and 8 deaths – 23,1% positivity

South Africa added 8920 new cases on Thursday, 12 May. The country now has 73 724 active cases of COVID-19.

South Africa recorded 8920 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, 12 May, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD). The 38 557 tests conducted over the past 24 hours represent a positivity rate of 23,1 percent.

SA ADDS 8920 NEW COVID-19 CASES

The 8920 new COVID-19 cases detected in South Africa on Thursday brings the total number of active cases in the country to 73 724. Eight people died of COVID-19-related complications in the last 24 to 48 hours, according to the NICD.

The National Department of Health added 21 deaths, including the aforementioned eight, bringing the death toll to 100 630.

There were 150 people admitted to hospital for COVID-19 treatment within the past 24 hours. The 261 private and 407 public hospitals reporting to the NICD now have 2965 patients admitted.

“The proportion of positive new cases/total new tested today is (23.1%), and is lower than yesterday (25.3%). The 7-day average is (24.7%) today, and is lower than yesterday (25.1%),” said the NICD.

PROVINCIAL BREAKDOWN

The majority of the cases identified on Wednesday were found in Gauteng (39%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (22%) and the Western Cape with 16 percent.

The Eastern Cape accounted for 7 percent, while the Free State had 6 percent.

North West accounted for 4 percent and Mpumalanga followed with 3 percent.

The Northern Cape (2%) and Limpopo (1%) rounded off the list on Thursday.

  • Eastern Cape – 622 cases;
  • Free State – 515 cases;
  • Gauteng –  3484 cases;
  • KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) – 1942 cases;
  • Limpopo – 104 cases;
  • Mpumalanga – 274 cases;
  • North West – 325 cases;
  • Northern Cape – 193 cases;
  • Western Cape – 1461 cases.
