South Africa added 10 017 new cases on Wednesday, 11 May. The country now has 68 872 active cases of COVID-19.

South Africa recorded 10 017 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, 11 May, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD). The 39 613 tests conducted over the past 24 hours represent a positivity rate of 25,3 percent.
The 10 017 new COVID-19 cases detected in South Africa on Wednesday brings the total number of active cases in the country to 68 872. Ten people died of COVID-19-related complications in the last 24 to 48 hours, according to the NICD.
The National Department of Health added 50 deaths, including the aforementioned 10, bringing the death toll to 100 609.
There were 164 people admitted to hospital for COVID-19 treatment within the past 24 hours. The 261 private and 407 public hospitals reporting to the NICD now have 3006 patients admitted.
“The proportion of positive new cases/total new tested today is (25.3%), and is higher than yesterday (23.0%). The 7-day average is (25.1%) today, and is higher than yesterday (24.7%),” said the NICD.
The majority of the cases identified on Wednesday were found in Gauteng (39%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (21%) and the Western Cape with 17 percent.
The Eastern Cape and Free State accounted for 6 percent, respectively, while Mpumalanga and North West each accounted for 3 percent, respectively.
Northern Cape (2%) and Limpopo (1%) rounded off the list.
