Another runner who took part in this weekend’s Comrades Marathon has been confirmed dead within the last few hours. Phaks Ntshiza, who represented the Adventists Running Club, lost his life after taking part in the gruelling 90km run.

Those tracking his progress noted that he appeared to ‘stop running’ almost halfway through the race. It was initially thought that Ntshiza had reached his limit, and caught the Comrades Bus to the finish line.

Ultra-marathon results in tragic deaths
The running club who Ntshiza competed for have posted their condolences on Monday evening. In a tribute shared in Facebook, Adventis offered their prayers and support to the family, stating that he had ‘touched all of those’ who were close to him.

Mzamo Mthembu: More details on the first reported death from Comrades Marathon 2022
Hollywoodbets Athletics Club member, Mzamo Mthembu, also died on Sunday while running the Comrades Marathon Route in KwaZulu-Natal. Mthembu had complications along the marathon route and collapsed in Pinetown.

He was taken to Life Westville Hospital where he died, Hollywoodsbet Athletics Club said.
The men’s race was won by South Africa’s Tete Dijana, who works as a security guard.

Russian Alexandra Morozova won the women’s race.
She was finally allowed to join the race at the last minute after an urgent application at the Pietermaritzburg High Court ordered her to participate.
