A former Ekurhuleni Metro Police superintendent and his accomplice have been found guilty and sentenced for a slew of rape, kidnapping, child sex and human trafficking charges in the South Gauteng High Court.

Former Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department Superintendent Adam Cummings and his co-accused Tebogo Maregele were charged for several counts of rape, sexual exploitation of children, children trafficking for sexual purposes and kidnapping. They were both earlier found guilty of the charges in South Gauteng High Court and sentenced for their crimes last week.

The state had alleged that between 2010 and 2015 Cummings had instructed Maregele to recruit children from Soweto for sex in exchange for cash and food.

During the trial it emerged that Cummings would visit Soweto with the help of Meregele, who would introduce children between the age of 9 and 16 years old to him.

The suspects then drove the children to the Soweto cemetery after buying KFC for them. On arrival at the cemetery Cummings would then show the children his police badge and firearm before raping them.

Both suspects were charged with fourteen criminal charges including kidnapping, four counts of rape, six counts of sexual exploitation of children and three counts of child trafficking for sexual gain.

Cummings was found guilty as charged and sentenced to four terms of life imprisonment plus six years in jail, while Meregele was sentenced to an effective 80 years in jail for his crimes.

Both Cummings and Meregele’s names will be added to the National Sexual Offenders Register of 2007.
