Even when a near-unprecedented natural disaster is dominating the headlines in South Africa, Eskom just can’t keep itself out of the spotlight. The utility confirmed on Tuesday morning that load shedding would intensify to Stage 4, after two key electricity generation units tripped. However, there is *some* relief for Cape Town.

That has had a devastating impact on the national grid, forcing Eskom to crank up the dial by two whole stages. The situation has deteriorated, and the firm’s CEO – Andre de Ruyter – is set to address the media.
“Regretfully, Eskom has just been forced to implement Stage 4 load shedding at 07:20 following Majuba Unit 5 and Tutuka Unit 4 tripping. A full statement will be published in due course.”

Eskom plunges South Africa into further darkness
There is, however, one place in the country that will escape the clutches of Stage 4 load shedding. The City of Cape Town has confirmed that those receiving a municipal supply of electricity will only experience Stage 3 power outages on Tuesday, with the new schedule coming into play at 8:00.
Cape Town is less reliant on Eskom than all other major metros and districts, meaning that it can often cushion the blow of heavy load shedding schedules. Stage 3 is still unpleasant, but it’s the best SA can offer right now.
