A massive drug consignment was found in the Airport Industrial area in Cape Town on Tuesday, 18 April, after members of the Bishop Lavis police station received a tip-off about a large amount of drugs being held at a business in the area.
Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Metro Police and Law Enforcement raided the business and searched a container.
Inside, they found 140 one-kilogram sealed bricks of cocaine in 18 boxes. The drugs have an estimated value of R84 million.
“An enquiry docket was opened for further investigation even though no arrest has been made as yet.
“The Provincial Detective’s Organised Crime, Narcotics Section has been assigned to investigation [sic] the circumstances and possible origin and destination of the drugs,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie.
Western Cape police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile praised the cops involved in the operation and indicated the confiscation was a step towards eradicating the spread and illegal trafficking of drugs in the province.
