Here we go again.

Brian Molefe has once again been kicked to the kerb, this time though, there can be no debate over “retirement” or “unpaid leave”.  Wednesday morning saw the announcement from an inter-ministerial committee, they had “reached a consensus on Molefe’s future.”

Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown has now announced that she has instructed the Eskom board to rescind the re-appointment of Brian Molefe as Eskom CEO.  The inter-ministerial committee was apointed by President Zuma himself after the ANC labelled Molefe’s return as a mistake and called for it to be reversed.

The committee was led by Justice Minister Michael Masutha and included Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba, Lynne Brown as Minister of Public Enterprises and Mmamoloko Kubayi from the energy ministry.

Molefe’s removal means that he was only back as Eskom’s chief executive for two weeks. While taking questions from journalists Minister Gigaba also said that there are “no plans” to deploy Molefe anywhere else or find another role for him.

Gigaba may have thrown some subtle shade at Minister Brown (sitting across the table from him) as he emphasised that the decision to reappoint him should not have been taken in the first place.

Mashuta said that the decision was taken “in the best interest of government, Eskom and the country as a whole.”

Well, it seems that Brian Molefe’s luck may finally have run out. From Eskom CEO (and Saxonwold) to MP, back to Eskom, to being axed as CEO. Even the ANC has had enough with him after their damning statements released against him over the last few weeks. Let us hope that Brian doesn’t come asking for that R30 million golden handshake again.
