Six years after Brian Molefe was given a dubious golden handshake upon his departure from Eskom, the utility has managed to reclaim the whopping sum that was taken from their coffers. A total of R30 million has been recovered this week.
It marks yet another footnote in Mr. Molefe’s hasty fall from grace. Last week, he appeared in court on multiple charges of fraud and corruption, relating to his ill-fated tenure at the helm of Transnet. His fellow Eskom grifter, Anoj Singh, also stood in the dock.
Seen as one of the chief enablers in the state capture saga, Brian Molefe stands accused of running Eskom into the ground – by favouring Gupta-linked businesses for premium tenders and contracts. When he left the firm in 2016, the outgoing CEO pulled off one last heist.
Inexplicably, Molefe walked away from Eskom with another R30 million in his back pocket. He successfully negotiated a boost for his early retirement payout, and exited the institution he’d help to destroy with a handsome reward. Alarm bells have been ringing ever since.
Ultimately, Molefe and Eskom were held accountable for this misappropriation, and the update provided on Wednesday will be music to the ears of pretty much every South African. Let’s just hope this R30 million goes towards rebuilding our ailing power plants…
