The police in Gauteng said a man and woman were injured in a shooting incident on the N4 Highway near Diamond Hill Toll Plaza, in East Pretoria, on Tuesday, 26 October. The man was declared dead at the scene and the woman was rushed to hospital. The Gauteng Police commissioner said the deceased was linked to the Boko Haram gang in Mamelodi.

BOKO HARAM GANG MEMBER KILLED

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said that eyewitnesses told the police that a black VW Polo was shot at by the occupants of a silver-grey Mercedes Benz at approximately 12:00 on Tuesday.

The driver of the Polo lost control of the vehicle, which came to a halt near the road where the shooting took place. The driver was declared dead at the scene, according to the police and the passenger was rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds.

“Preliminary investigations on the scene identified the deceased as 35-year-old Phillip Given Mnguni. The Task Team established to investigate gang activities in Mamelodi had already linked him to several cases linked to the Boko Haram,” said Muridili.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela said there have not been any reports of gang-related murders in Mamelodi since the deployment of the Task Team and Visible Policing members. The Commissioner believes that this is an indication that the additional measures the province has put in place are having the desired effect.

“This particular deceased was the number one wanted suspect in our investigations into the Boko Haram activities that were happening in Mamelodi,” said Mawela. He added that he told the Task Team to continue profiling Mnguni and ensure that are the investigations related to the crimes he is accused of are completed.

HUNT FOR THE SILVER MERCEDES

Muridili said the gang-related murders Task Team attended the scene and a case of murder and attempted murder have been opened.

No arrests have been made thus far but the police are on the lookout for the silver Mercedes Benz that was allegedly used by the shooters.

“We are appealing to anyone that might have come across the said the silver Mercedes Benz to call the SAPS Crime Stop Number 08600 10111. Information received will be treated with confidentiality,” said the police spokesperson.
