Bheki Cele visits Westbury after spate of gang-related shooting incidents

Two people have been killed and nine others injured in Westbury shooting incidents since 25 February. Newclare has also seen a spike in gang violence

The Minister of Police Bheki Cele and the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) management, including Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, will visit Westbury, Johannesburg, on Thursday, 2 March, following the shooting incidents in the area.

According to the police, two people have been killed and 11 injured in six separate shooting incidents in Westbury reported since 25 February.

Cele and the SAPS management are expected to visit Sophiatown police station and be briefed about the crime levels in the Westbury and Newclare policing precincts, which have recently seen a spike in gang violence.

“The purpose of the meeting, is to establish the effectiveness of the operational response to the violence, which includes amongst other SAPS units, Crime Intelligence, Public Order Police(POP) Technical Response Team (TRT) Anti Gang unit and additional Detectives,” said Cele’s spokesperson Lirandzu Themba.
