It’s official: The April petrol price is another record-breaker, and the per-litre cost of fuel increases from 00:01 on Wednesday. However, the damage could have been MUCH worse, if not for government intervention.

Official April petrol price revealed: What’s the damage?

The ANC’s decision to slice R1.50 off the fuel levy has saved petrol consumers from a crippling increase. But, despite this act of mercy, diesel users have been stung by a much steeper rise in costs.

The cost of 95 Grade petrol goes up by 36 cents per-litre, and 93 Grade is now 28 cents per-litre more expensive. Had the fuel levy remained untouched, this increment could have pushed the R2p/l mark.

Diesel at the 0.05% Grade is soaring by R1.52, and it’s even worse for those filling-up with the 0.005% Grade – that’s going to sky-rocket by R1.69. Even with the cushion of a fuel tax cut, the diesel price rises are eye-watering, and would have easily topped R3-per-litre without help from the state.

Late movement in both oil and foreign exchange markets helped bring the forecast April petrol price down to a slightly more respectable total, too. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy confirmed the adjustments on Monday evening, and it’s hoped that the fuel situation will come under control soon.

The fuel levy reduction is in place until the end of May, meaning that next month’s petrol price will also be subsidised by the government. As for the April petrol price, we’ve worked out the average per-litre costs for all grades:

Inland average fuel costs

  • Petrol 95: R21.96
  • Petrol 93: R21.63
  • Diesel 0.05%: R21.01
  • Diesel 0.005%: R21.23

Coastal average fuel costs

  • Petrol 95: R21.24
  • Petrol 93: R21.11
  • Diesel 0.05%: R20.39
  • Diesel 0.005%: R20.64
