Anna Sorokin, the convicted con artist who posed as a German heiress and managed to swindle some of New York’s elite, has been released from jail.

Sorokin (31) is the subject of Netflix’s Inventing Anna, had been held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since March 2021. Under the terms of her release, she is forbidden from using social media. In addition, Anna must also remain under 24-hour house arrest with electronic monitoring, in addition to posting $10,000 bail.

Her immigration attorney, John Sandweg, confirmed to media that she was being transferred from the Orange County correctional facility in upstate New York to downtown Manhattan.

“She is on her way to being released … she is still going through the final processing,” Sandweg said. “She’s out of the jail where she was being held,” he said.

WHAT IS ANNA SOROKIN ACCUSED OF DOING?

Anna Sorokin, also known by the alias Anna Delvey, managed to scam at least $200 000 (more than R3 million) from wealthy New Yorkers. She also managed to convince a bank to give her a $100 000 overdraft (over R1,5 million). She was arrested in 2017 after racking up hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid bills from hotels, banks and friends.

Sorokin was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison and was released on good behaviour in February 2021. But months later, immigration officials detained her and she is currently awaiting deportation back to Germany. Now 32 years old, she was born in Russia, but her family relocated to Germany in 2007, when she was a teenager.

Sorokin has been compared to Simon Leviev, the Israeli man who went viral earlier this year after he was accused of swindling a number of women out of millions of dollars.
