COVID-19: SA records 3785 cases and 2 deaths – 17,6% positivity

South Africa added 3785 new cases on Tuesday. The country now has 40 186 active cases of COVID-19.

South Africa recorded 3785 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, 3 May, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD). The 21 518 tests conducted over the past 24 hours represent a positivity rate of 17,6 percent.

SA ADDS 3785 NEW COVID-19 CASES

The 3785 new COVID-19 cases detected in South Africa on Tuesday brings the total number of active cases in the country to 40 186. Two people died of COVID-19-related complications in the last 24 to 48 hours, according to the NICD.

The National Department of Health added seven deaths, including the aforementioned two, bringing the death toll to 100 377.

There were 68 people admitted to hospital for COVID-19 treatment within the past 24 hours. The 261 private and 407 public hospitals reporting to the NICD now have 2232 patients admitted.

“The proportion of positive new cases/total new tested today is (17.6%), and is lower than yesterday (21.0%). The 7-day average is (20.6%) today, and is lower than yesterday (20.7%). The 7-day moving average daily number of cases has increased,” said the NICD.

PROVINCIAL BREAKDOWN

The majority of the cases identified on Tuesday were found in Gauteng (45%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (28%) and the Western Cape with 12 percent.

The Free State (5%), Eastern Cape (4), Mpumalanga (2%) and North West (2%) followed and Limpopo and Northern Cape rounded off the list with 1 percent each, respectively.

  • Eastern Cape – 156 cases;
  • Free State – 187 cases;
  • Gauteng –  1685 cases;
  • KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) – 1056 cases;
  • Limpopo – 40 cases;
  • Mpumalanga – 74 cases;
  • North West – 62 cases;
  • Northern Cape – 52 cases;
  • Western Cape – 473 cases.
