Botswana for the Batswana, government bars Zimbabweans from working on farms

Farmers in Bots had better pull up their socks, as their government takes a hard line against hiring foreigners to work on farms.

Africa’s oldest democracy has made it crystal clear; if you want to farm in Bots, you’ll hire locals to work for you. News24 and NewZimbabwe.com reported that land owners living in our wealthier neighbouring state are not taking the news too well.

Zimbabweans are, according to Botswana’s farmers, more effective and locals too lazy. This said, Bots’ minister of home affairs Edwin Batshu refuses to budge. Botswana does not grant farm-working permits to Zimbabweans, these jobs are reserved for locals only.

Batshu made it clear that Botswana will not become reliant on foreign labour and that farmers will pay locals higher salaries as motivation for farm labour.
