Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko confirmed the number at the memorial service for the victims.
Nkomo-Ralehoko added that the figure included 10 healthcare workers.
Tanker got stuck under a bridge
Worryingly, she confirmed that the death toll could still rise.

As extensively reported by The South African website, the tanker got stuck under a bridge and began leaking, resulting in a massive explosion that damaged private and public infrastructure and caused several fatalities.
Driver released due to lack of evidence
The 32-year-old driver of the tanker which exploded on 24 December was released from prison due to lack of evidence on Tuesday.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) stated that there is no evidence against the driver.

He was initially arrested and charged on cases of culpable homicide and was due to appear in the Boksburg Magistrates Court.
