The four Boksburg North police officers accused of the assault and torture of a foreign nation national appeared in the local Magistrates Court on Friday, 3 February.

The appearance on Friday was the police officers’ first time in court. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said that the formal bail hearing for the accused had been set for 7 February 2023.

“Their charges have also been reviewed and changed from assault GBH and defeating the ends of justice to kidnapping and attempted murder,” said IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping.

The accused – three Constables and a Sergeant – remain in detention at the Boksburg Holding Cells.

As previously reported, the four accused are members of the Boksburg North police station’s visible policing unit. They were arrested on Wednesday, 1 February, for the alleged assault and torture of a man earlier this year.

The IPID said the victim and his friends were approached by the police officers who demanded to see their identity documentation.

When the victim could not produce an original copy of the required documentation, he was taken to the police station, where the officers allegedly assaulted and tortured him, said IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping.

The victim was hospitalized due to his injuries and was in a coma for nine days.
