Body of newborn baby found washed ashore on Brighton Beach

Police said a newborn baby boy with fair skin washed up with the blanket. Police are seeking the community’s assistance in tracing the mother.

The body of a newborn baby was found washed ashore on Brighton Beach in Gqeberha on Friday. 

POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR THE MOTHER OF THE BABY 

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu detectives seek the community’s assistance. 

“Detectives seek the community’s assistance in tracing the mother of a newborn baby whose body was found washed ashore on Brighton Beach yesterday afternoon, 17 September 2021.”

Naidu said according to police information, at about 13:30, people cleaning the beach noticed a colourful blanket washed up on the beach. 

“On further inspection, it was discovered that a newborn baby boy was washed up with the blanket. The race of the baby cannot be determined. However, the child is very fair-skinned.”

She said a black refuse bag containing more blankets and a placenta (afterbirth) also washed up with the baby.

An inquest docket is under investigation.

Anyone who can assist in tracing the mother of the baby or may know of anyone who may have been recently pregnant and no longer has a child to contact SAPS Mount Road detectives on 041 3946523/6316 or Crime Stop 08600 10111 or their nearest police station. 

Earlier this week, the body of a newborn fetus wrapped in a rubbish bag was discovered at the Phoenix taxi rank in Durban. 

THE NEWBORN FETUS WAS DISCARDED IN A BIN

According to Emer-G-Med spokesperson, Kyle van Reenen a commuter waiting for his taxi, made the grizzly discovery.

“Paramedics were flagged down by members of the public in the Warwick Avenue area after a commuter made a grizzly discovery whilst waiting for his taxi at the Phoenix taxi rank in the CBD.” 

Van Reenen said paramedics were taken to a bin where they were shown the body of a newborn fetus wrapped in a rubbish bag.

He said the fetus was discarded in the bin.

DESPERATE MOTHERS URGED NOT TO DUMP THEIR BABIES

“Abandonment of infants in South Africa is, unfortunately, a common occurrence,” The Door of Hope organisation said.

“Many of these children are left to die, or simply abandoned, in dustbins, open fields, public toilets, or on train tracks.”

The organisation that something needed to be done.

The moment a baby is placed, care workers on duty receive an electronic signal alerting them. The baby is taken in and the anonymity of the “donor” is ensured.
