KZN: Community finds body of missing 14-year-old girl in shallow grave

Members of the local community in KZN, who were collecting building sand, made a gruesome discovery when they found the body of a girl in a shallow grave.

The body of a 14-year-old girl was found in a shallow grave in Bishopstowe, KZN on Monday 10 May, just a short while after she was reported missing. According to police in the province, the local community made the gruesome discovery. 

KZN COMMUNITY DISCOVERS BODY OF MISSING TEENAGER  

KZN police released a brief statement on Tuesday saying that members were called out to assist Bishopstowe South African Police Service (SAPS) regarding a body recovery. 

According to the statement, which had been released on social media, members of the local community who were collecting building sand, found the body of the teenage girl in a shallow grave. 

While police could not provide the girl’s identity, they did state that it was a 14-year-old girl that was reported missing over the weekend. Colonel Thembeka Mbele said a murder case has since been opened. 

“Saps KZN yesterday PMB #SAR members were called to assist Bishopstowe SAPS in a body recovery from a shallow grave. A body was discovered by the local community while collecting building sand. Body identified as 14-year-old female who was reported missing over the weekend,” SAPS said on Twitter.

GIRL GOES MISSING IN LIMPOPO 

Apart from the case in KZN, police in Giyani, Limpopo launched a search operation to find a missing 14 -year-old girl by the name of Khegula Innocent Modika from Mphagane Village in the Dzumeri area.

“It is alleged that the girl, who is a Grade 7 learner at Govani Primary School in Phagani Village, left home on 2 May 2021 after telling her grandmother that she was going to buy airtime at a local spaza shop and since that day she never returned,” said Constable Maphure Manamela. 

Police conducted search operations at relatives, friends and surrounding areas but she was not found. She was last seen wearing a pink T-shirt, grey trousers and blue sandals.

Manamela went on to say that police search operations and the investigation are still continuing.
