Police are on the hunt for two men suspected of opening fire on a Porsche in Bedfordview, Gauteng, on Monday afternoon.

According to reports, a 43-year-old man was ambushed in Bedfordview while stopped at a traffic light. It’s alleged that two men riding a motorcycle pulled up alongside the man’s Porsche and opened fire through the driver’s side window.

Police hesitant to reveal details of the victim

The Citizen reports that Bedfordview South African Police Services (SAPS) spokesperson, Captain André de Jager, confirmed the fatal shooting which took place at the corner of Van Buuren and Kloof roads.

The driver attempted to flee but eventually succumbed to his injuries 100 metres down the road. De Jager added that police investigators were not at liberty to reveal the motives behind the killing despite the event having all the hallmarks of a contract killing, saying:

“The 43-year-old man stopped at the traffic light when two men on a motorcycle shot him. They shot him through the car window. The victim attempted to flee and managed to drive a bit further but he died in his vehicle.

He drove for about a 100 metres after he was shot and ended up next to the Engen Garage, where he got out of his vehicle and died.

We are also looking into the possibility of this being a hit but we cannot confirm at this stage.”

Bedfordview residents urged to come forward with any information

According to a report by News24, the slain man was believed to have lived in the north of Johannesburg and had just arrived back from an overseas trip.

De Jager also confirmed that the family had not yet been notified and, as such, sensitivity surrounding the victim’s identity was paramount. The police spokesperson said:

“Bedfordview police officers have opened a murder docket and an investigation is ongoing. He [the victim] cannot be named because not all his family has been notified. They are currently overseas.”
