Bed bugs invade Victoria Falls high-density suburbs

Bed bugs have hit Zimbabwe’s biggest tourist city, Victoria Falls. The bugs have invaded most of the residential areas in the area.

Residents have been warned and have been urged to report infestations to health officials.
BED BUGS INVADE VICTORIA FALLS
The Victoria Falls City Council has confirmed the outbreak of bed bugs, according to the Chronicle.
“Victoria Falls city council is urging its valued residents, stakeholders and visitors to be on high alert for the presence of bed bugs in all areas of residence in the city,” the council said in a statement.

Victoria Falls City Town Council Clerk, Ronnie Dube, said the council has been disinfecting affected areas for free.
The town has a population of more than 100 000, with most inhabitants living in high-density suburbs.

The worst affected areas are Emadonkini, Emarailways, and Esikwahleni. These areas are known for overcrowding.
Bed bugs feed on blood, usually found in rags beneath beds and couches. They are reddish-brown inserts. Their bites are not dangerous or life-threatening but cause itchiness and rashes.

VIC FALLS IS A TOURIST DESTINATION FOR MANY
Victoria Falls is a highly sought-after tourist destination, boasting numerous curio shops and lavish five-star hotels.
Known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “the smoke that thunders,” the falls attract visitors worldwide.

According to the Zimbabwean government, Victoria Falls received 352 719 tourists in the first half of 2022.
It was once listed among the seven wonders of the world, and in recent years several celebrities and billionaires have visited Victoria Falls.
