Barack Obama is in Johannesburg this Tuesday, as he delivers the 16th annual Nelson Mandela Lecture from The Wanderers.

The former president of the United States will be paying tribute to a man who inspired his own journey into leadership. Obama is scheduled to speak at 14:45, 15 minutes after South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has taken to the stage.

What can we expect from Barack Obama’s speech?

The theme for Mandela Day this year is “be the legacy” – the concept is designed to encourage South Africans to positively represent the change they want to see in the world. Obama is likely to touch on this message and, given that his presidential campaign was won on the promise of change, he’s the right man for the job.

Both Madiba and Obama have left incredible legacies, but neither are without their critics. The challenges of leadership and unification should also be discussed.
