A bank card swindler was caught red-handed while using a cloned card at a toll gate in Mpumalanga.

SWINDLER FOUND WITH FLEET BANK CARDS

The foreign national, Phinda Alex Ndlovu, 25, drove a Scania truck on the N4 on Wednesday.

His journey took place during an operation by the police together with forensic investigators from large banks Absa and First National Bank (FNB).

This happened at the N4 Nkomazi toll plaza, Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said.

It is further alleged that the suspect entered the tollgate booth at Nkomazi Plaza near Kaapmuiden. He presented a stolen Standard Bank fleet card to the cashier. He successfully paid at the tollgate.

The man was also found with tollgate slips and tax invoices, Sekgotodi said.

But further intelligence-driven investigations found that the stolen Standard Bank card, which was just used, was actually used at various tollgates on the N4 for two years.

The card was fraudulently used between 10 July and 17 August 2022, said Sekgotodi.

“The abovementioned cloned card recorded transactions made at an estimated value of over R72 000.”

The owner of the truck was found and a statement was taken. The owner confirmed that cash was indeed given to the driver to make payments at the tollgates.

“The suspect is arrested and charged with fraud, contravention of section 3(2) read with section 3(3) and section 8 of the Cyber Crime Act.”

He appeared before the Low’s Creek Periodical Court on Thursday. He has remained in custody and his case was postponed to Thursday, 25 August.
