According to private security, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) they received a call from a resident in the area on Sunday morning requesting assistance after the infant’s mother arrived at their residence to claim the child.

Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched to the area and on arrival met with angry residents who explained that the child was located by a passerby in overgrown vegetation next to a tavern in Osindisweni on Saturday night.

RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram said at first glance the passerby presumed that the baby was deceased as she appeared unresponsive. Upon closer investigation, he realised that the child was asleep.

Balram said the male then sought assistance from a female at the tavern but she was heavily intoxicated and then decided to hand the baby over to his mother for safe keeping.

On Sunday the baby’s 16-year-old mother arrived at the residence to collect her child after hearing of the incident. Members of the community refused to hand her over and they then contacted RUSA for assistance.

“Reaction Officers interviewed the teenage mother who explained that she was attending a house party in the area and asked her 30-year-old boyfriend to babysit. He allegedly proceeded to the tavern with the baby and at some stage abandoned her in a bush. He has not been located since.”

The mother and child were handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation.

The incident comes just three weeks after another baby was dumped in a bush in KwaZulu-Natal with an apology note believed to be written by the mother.

In the note, the mother asked not to be judged for her decision and explained that she approached social workers but did not get the assistance she sought. A few days after the incident was widely reported, the young mother was arrested.
