Athlone: Woman, 49, killed at City of Cape Town water treatment centre

Two women were shot at a City of Cape Town building in Athlone on Monday. One of the victims succumbed to her injuries.

The police in the Western Cape are investigating a fatal shooting incident that took place in Jan Smuts Avenue, Athlone on Monday, 28 March.

WOMAN KILLED IN ATHLONE

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the shooting happened at approximately 12:10.

A 49-year-old woman was fatally wounded by an unknown gunman while a 39-year-old woman was shot in the left shoulder.

Two other people present at the City of Cape Town Water Treatment Centre were not injured in the ordeal.

“The victims were taken to a nearby medical facility for medical treatment,” said van Wyk. The Cape Town police are investigating a case of murder and three attempted murders.

“The suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction, and is yet to be arrested,” said the police spokesperson.

City of Cape Town MayCo Member for Water and Sanitation Zahid Badroodien said “it is with immense shock that I inform our greater Cape Town community of the fatal shooting that has taken place at our Scientific Services Branch based in Athlone,” in a tweet on Monday.
