Two armed robbery suspects were fatally wounded and one injured during a shootout with law enforcement agencies in Olifantsfontein, Ekurhuleni, today, Monday, 13 March 2023.

SUSPECTS WERE ON THEIR WAY TO COMMIT A CRIME

Police recovered three unlicensed firearms and a vehicle reported to be hijacked in Sandringham earlier this month.

The robbers were fatally wounded while on their way to commit a robbery in Ekurhuleni at around 10:30 this morning.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the police’s Crime Intelligence Unit received information bout the armed robbery and car hijacking suspects planning to commit a robbery in Ekurhuleni.

ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECTS FATALLY WOUNDED

“A team of law enforcement agencies, including SAPS Ekurhuleni Central Crime Intelligence, SAPS Highway Patrol Unit, Gauteng Traffic Police Saturation Unit, Tracker Connect, and Bad Boyz Security, operationalised the information and kept a close observation,” says Masondo.

Masondo said the team spotted the three suspects driving in a GWM SUV and intercepted them.

The suspects opened fire, and the police returned. Two armed suspects were fatally wounded, and one was injured. Masondo says the suspects’ vehicle hit a fence.

POLICE KILLED TWO ARMED ROBBERS IN A SHOOTOUT

Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle driven by the armed robbers was reportedly hijacked in Sandringham earlier this month. It was fitted with a false registration number.

The wounded suspect was arrested. He faces charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. He will also be charged with possession of a hijacked vehicle and attempted murder.

Masondo said the police will investigate if the fatally wounded suspects and the one that was arrested were linked to other crimes. The suspect will appear in court soon.
