Armed response officer survives attack during hijacking incident

While responding to a hijacking incident, an armed response officer’s car was repeatedly shot at by criminals on Bluff Road.

A 46-year-old armed response officer is lucky to be alive after armed suspects reportedly opened fire while he was responding to a hijacking incident on Bluff Road in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Wednesday. 

ARMED RESPONSE OFFICER SHOT IN BLUFF

According to emergency service, Emer-G-Med, paramedics together with ALS Medical Services, arrived on the scene to find the armed response officer had suffered a gunshot wound to his chest with a shrapnel wound to the left arm.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson, Kyle Van Reenen said fortunately, the man was wearing a bulletproof vest which prevented the bullet from penetrating his chest area, ultimately saving his life.

Van Reenen said the officer was treated and stabilised for moderate injuries before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care.

“Reports from the scene are that a hijacking had occurred when the officer came down the road encountering an armed gang who opened fire on his vehicle with a high calibre rifle and numerous pistols.

“A bystander’s vehicle was also struck in the incident damaging the tyre. No other injuries were reported.”

The South African Police Service (SAPS) were also reportedly in attendance and will be conducting the necessary investigation accordingly.

Meanwhile, a security guard was allegedly shot in the face by one of five robbers who had cornered him after he had collected money from a filling station at Garelane in Bushbuckridge on Friday afternoon, 26 August 2022.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Selvy Mohlala, the security guard had entered the kiosk alone whilst the driver was waiting for him outside at shortly before 14h00.

While he was collecting money, five suspects entered the premises, one followed him in the kiosk pretending to be a customer, after which the group pounced on him.

“When he was about to exit the Kiosk with money trunk, the suspect who was inside shot him once on his right hand side of the face next to his eye. The suspect then grabbed the money trunk with an undisclosed cash. He was joined by the other four suspects and ran to the road towards Shatale where they disa.ppeared”
