Staff members of the African National Congress (ANC) are not happy with how the party has responded to its grievances and accused it of suggesting that their strike is politically motivated.

The staffers downed tools on Thursday, 26 August 2021, over two months of unpaid salaries. The ANC has been experiencing somewhat of a cash crunch recently and also is yet to settle a R80 million SARS tax bill.

ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe held a press briefing on the same day of the strike action, where he stressed that the party is hard at work attending to staff salaries, but they are far from pleased.

“Any suggestions that raising our grievances is a political ploy to undermine our President Comrade Cyril Ramaphosa is a fallacy and a diversion from the conditions of squalor which staff members are being subjected to by a movement which historically projected itself as a voice of the working class and the poor. It must also be clarified that fundraising is not a function of the Presidency in the ANC. We frown upon this laughable hypocritical insinuations,” staff said in a statement.

“The national spokesperson is also a staff member at our head office and we are fighting for his rights as well. Its therefore becomes important that he communicates the ANC message around the industrial action, with the highest form of sensitivity to the plight of the rest of staff members”

ANC staff slams ‘fake news peddlers’

The ANC staff also slammed what they called fake news peddlers who seek to undermine their industrial action.

The employees claim people have been disturbing media statements, purported to be from other staff members.

“In the fake statement leadership of the ANC is being attacked and threatened in what appears to be a political battle against the leadership of our movement. Ours is not to venture into any factional battles, but to advance the struggle for better working conditions for ANC staff. We call all those involved in this propagandist mudslinging campaign to desist from their nefarious acts and allow staff members to genuinely address their concerns with the ANC management,” the employees said.
