The question on everyone’s lips: Who will be the next president of the ANC?

While the top contenders don’t shy away from controversy, lines have been drawn to ensure the “best man” wins.

The divisions within the leading party in South Africa is evident.

Many ANC members have either gone live on TV or taken to their social media to make their choices known.

While Cyril Ramaphosa has some of the legacies behind him. Zweli Mkhize has taken to the provinces to garner support for Nasrec.

Zweli courts controversy

Last year headlines across the country suggested alleged links between Mkhize to the assassination of whistleblower Babita Deokaran. While the matter is yet to resume in court, Mkhize is said to be saddened that he was linked. Deokaran was gunned down in Johannesburg on 23 August 2022 while in her car. Deokaran is said to be a key whistle-blower in an investigation into dodgy PPE contracts in Gauteng.

Cyril and his latest debacle

Ramaphosa has been making international headlines since the undeclared dollars in his couch allegation came to head. It seems that someone in the know ratted him out. Otherwise the couch incident would remain the secret it has been for as long as the dollars have been stashed there. Cyril has made his voice clear on the incident and has denied any wrongdoing in the matter with the buyer of the buffalo even coming forward to mention that’s how he rolls (the amount of cash he walks around with).

And the crown goes to

With more than 4000 delegates casting their votes for the leadership of the ANC it is either or at this point. Later today South Africa will know whether Cyril or Zweli leads the ANC and inevitably the entire nation for the next five years. All in all both candidates have courted their own controversy in recent months and it is up to the 4000 to choose who they feel can lead the country solidly – an alleged mastermind or someone who doesn’t declare all of his assets, allegedly.
