This follows a decline in the ANC’s support in Nelson Mandela Bay, Tshwane, Johannesburg, and Ekurhuleni.

The ANC in Gauteng indefinitely postponed a planned media briefing on the results of the local government elections on Sunday because an urgent provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting was being convened.

The briefing was supposed to have been held by ANC greater Johannesburg chairperson, Parks Tau, whose position as mayor in the metro now hangs in the balance as the party failed to reach 50% of the vote in the elections.

“The postponement is due to a planned special urgent provincial executive committee meeting, wherein the Gauteng province will collectively reflect on the elections and chart a way forward,” the ANC had said.

The ANC suffered a significant setback in Gauteng, as it got below 50% in the Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekuhuleni metros, as well as in the Mogale City municipality. The DA retained the Midvaal municipality.

The ANC would need to enter coalition agreements with other parties if it still wanted to keep those hung councils.

The ANCYL in the province on Saturday lamented the “devastating election outcomes”.

“This [Johannesburg] is a metro we have performed poorly in as a party, the economic hub of the country and continent,” it had said in a statement.

It said the results left much to be desired and did not “warrant a celebration”.
