A North West African National Congress (ANC) member, Sello Molefe reportedly opened cases of fraud and perjury against the ANC’s deputy president Paul Mashatile after accusing him of appointing deceased people to the ANC North West interim provincial committee (IPC) during his tenure as acting secretary-general.

According to Business Live, Molefe alleges Mashatile lied in a case that sought to nullify the ninth provincial conference by telling the court the party’s national executive committee (NEC) had decided to reappoint the IPC that organised the conference.

MEMBERS WHO WERE NOT ALIVE AND RESIGNED WERE APPOINTED TO IPC

That IPC, however, included three members who were no longer alive: Maitu Kgaile, Sophie Maine and OJ Tselapedi.

It also included Supra Mahumapelo and Job Mokgoro who who resigned as IPC members.

“Not only did the terms of the deceased IPC members end on 29 April 2020 while they were still alive, but their ANC membership also lapsed as at the respective dates of their passing. Yet Mashatile alleged in the answering affidavit the ANC NEC purportedly resolved on July 26-29 2022 to reappoint these deceased ANC members into the IPC even though they were [dead].

“The terms of office of Mahumapelo and Mokgoro ended when they resigned on 30 September 2019 and 26 August 2021, respectively. Mahumapelo and Mokgoro could therefore not be reappointed as IPC members by their resignations,” Molefe said as quoted by the report.

‘MEMBERS OF THE ANC WHO HAVE GRIEVANCES SHOULD UTILISE THE PARTY’S DISPUTE RESOLUTION PROCESS

The party’s general secretary Fikile Mbalula said any member of the ANC who has a grievance emanating from organisational processes should utilise the ANC’s dispute resolution mechanisms,” Sunday World reported.

“The ANC’s misstep in failing to renew the mandate of the IPC meant that the structure did not have the authority to organise the party’s provincial elective conference in Rustenburg last August,” said Mbalula as quoted by the report.
