ANC Youth League prepares for elective conference after constant criticism

Maybe this time they will actually be young enough to be from the “youth”?

The ANC Youth League has become a political joke over the last few years. League President Collen “Oros” Maine has been torn to pieces in memes, jokes and just in general. Factor in the allegations of corruption and you really have a proper shit show.

Now, after a decision taken by the ANC National Executive Committee, the league will have an elective conference at some point in June. The conference comes as South Africans demand that the league actually has youthful people in its leadership positions.

The league’s current secretary general Njabulo Nzuza has slammed structures for using social media to put pressure on the league to announce the conference date.

“This thing is not decided over Facebook posts. We are going to call a conference because we have no intention of overstaying our welcome,” Nzuza said.

The race to replace Oros is currently between Ndumiso Mokako, KZN youth league secretary general Thanduxolo Sabelo and current treasurer-general Reggie Nkabinde.

League spokesperson Mlondi Mkhize explained that regional congresses had sat over the weekend and were getting their houses in order.

Ndumiso Mokako also criticised some structures for excessive gatekeeping and sidelining members.

“The league is no longer a platform for dealing with youth issues; young people in the ANC have been reduced to defending certain leaders or pronouncing them for leadership positions, but hardly speak about the injustices young people are subjected to on a daily basis,” said Mokako.

While speaking at a memorial service for Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Maine confused the nation when he admitted that it was North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo that introduced him to the Gupta family.

Mahumapelo is currently facing province-wide protests as residents demand he be removed from office.

Plans for the June conference have been described as “moving at a snail’s pace”.

That in itself doesn’t sound very youthful.
