An African National Congress (ANC) ward councillor in Ekurhuleni was arrested for allegedly looting a liquor store during the unrest that took place in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. The party confirmed the arrest and once again denounced the destruction of property in the affected provinces.

ANC WARD COUNCILLOR ARRESTED FOR THEFT, PUBLIC VIOLENCE

The regional executive committee of the ANC in Ekurhuleni confirmed the arrest of one of its councillors for theft and public violence. The councillor, who is reportedly from Daveyton, was one of the individuals looting a bottle store at the local shopping centre, according to EWN.

The ANC’s “step-aside” rule has been in the spotlight often this year, and the suspect councillor may face disciplinary action from the political party along with his legal troubles.

“Given the fact that the ward councillor has been formally charged, ANC corrective measures will be implemented as per the ANC constitution and guidelines on disciplinary dictates,” said the ANC.

“The ANC in Ekurhuleni reaffirms its stance of denouncing destruction to property and looting by anyone, including our members in general and deployees.”

The party called on law enforcement agencies to carry out their work in this matter “with the greatest urgency.”

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Mat Cuthbert said the councillor must be given a fair trial, by a “competent court” and must face the “full might of the law” if found guilty.

“The toll that the recent social unrest took on the lives and livelihoods of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal residents will take many years to remedy. The DA will follow this case closely to ensure that justice is served,” said Cuthbert.
