The African National Congress told its supporters in Atteridgeville on Tuesday to “stop behaving like hooligans”.

Violent protests have gripped Tshwane over the last few days after the ANC announced its mayoral candidate for the metro.

ANC national executive committee member and Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi told reporters:
“We are here together with provincial chairperson Paul Mashatile and regional chairperson Kgosientso Ramokgopa. We came to listen to the community as well as members of the ANC. We have listened to the people and told them that ANC is a listening organisation.”

“They told us in the meeting that they are ANC members and not hooligans. We then told them to behave like members and not like hooligans. We told them that, and that they will be listened to,” he added.

At the meeting, around 33 people spoke and many raised grievances regarding the announcement of former cabinet minister Thoko Didiza as the ANC’s mayoral candidate for Tshwane.

Motsoaledi said the grievances had been noted and “we will see them later”.
